THIS A SENSITIVE GOVERNMENT POSITION

The Division of Forensic Sciences within the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill Crime Lab Scientist vacancies in the Chemistry Department. Applicants selected for employment will be offered a position at the following crime laboratories as the final work location:

GBI Headquarters Laboratory located in Decatur, GA

Central Lab located in Dry Branch, GA

Coastal Lab located in Pooler, GA

Eastern Lab located in Augusta, GA

Western Lab located in Midland, GA  

Northeastern Lab located in Cleveland, GA

Southwestern Lab located in Moultrie, GA

Applicants must select their geographic location preference(s) by answering the supplemental questions during the application process if applicable. Applicants may also be given an opportunity to select their geographic location preference(s) at the time of interview. THE 12 MONTH TRAINING PROGRAM MAY BE HELD AT A LAB OUTSIDE OF THE FINAL WORK LOCATION.

Job Duties:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under immediate or limited supervision perform laboratory examinations, scientific analysis and comparisons on physical evidence submitted by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies for investigative and legal purposes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collect, identify, classify and analyze physical evidence.

Chemistry Section

The primary function of the Chemistry Section is to analyze items of evidence in order to determine the presence or absence of controlled substances.  Chemists analyze suspected drugs and fire debris, provide expert testimony to the courts, supply the courts and other state agencies with factual drug information, and provide information to the general public and news media about drug abuse. Additionally, a team of scientists is trained to assist police officers in clandestine laboratory seizures as well as educate law enforcement.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in a natural, physical, or forensic science from an accredited college or university with the successful completion of at least at least 32 semester (or 48 quarter) hours of CHEMISTRY coursework.

 * Successful completion is considered a "C" or better in coursework.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The incumbent will occasionally be required to stand; walk; reach, carry with hands and arms; stoop and kneel. Frequent light lifting and/or moving 10lbs. of evidence kits or supplies unassisted is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

These positions require the incumbent to work in a laboratory setting which includes shared office space with other Crime Lab personnel. These positions must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in the laboratory to include lab coat, gloves, face mask and protective eye wear. PPE will be provided.

NOTE: This position will require some travel and operating a state vehicle for court. A valid Georgia driver’s license is required.

EXAMINATION SUBJECTS:
The test will be relative to the discipline or position you select. If you apply for multiple disciplines, additional tests may be required.
