STATE PROFILE SUMMARY: Under supervision, provides entry level professional support in environmental services.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under close supervision, perform entry level work learning to do the following:
  • Conduct project management tasks as an Archaeology Subject Matter Expert including status updates, project tracking, scope and work hour development, and other tasks as required.
  • Plan and conduct surveys and research for Federal-aid and State-aid transportation projects to identify archaeological resources and evaluate their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Prepare and/or review the appropriate documentation as required by State and Federal laws and regulations.
  • Compare design alternatives to assess effects of the proposed transportation projects to those resources.
  • Prepare and/or review documentation concerning such resources and effects to them in accordance with various State and Federal environmental laws and regulations.
  • Complete mitigation of adversely affected resources.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Georgia Department of Transportation and other State and Federal agencies and private parties concerned with archaeological resources of the state.
  • Travel statewide with occasional overnight stay.
  • Occasionally work after normal business hours, as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Qualifications

STATE ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

AGENCY SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possesses a Bachelor's and/or graduate degree in Anthropology or Archaeology or a closely related field.
  • Read and understand plans, maps, and aerial photographs.
  • Recollect instructional information to accurately apply new knowledge and skills learned in work performed.
  • Communicate and work effectively with internal and external staff, agencies, consultants, and customers in a professional, cooperative manner to provide quality customer service.
  • Communicate ideas and facts to individuals and groups both verbally and in writing in a clear, professional, and organized manner.
  • Adapt to change including new policies and procedures.
  • Manage own time effectively while dealing effectively with multiple priorities.
  • Problem solve – generate and evaluate alternatives to recommend a sound solution applying the appropriate rule, policy, or procedure, or suggest new methods and procedures, as needed.
  • Work effectively with others to find mutually acceptable solutions.

AGENCY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field
  • NOTE: Applicants who have completed their master's coursework and are in the process of completing their thesis in order to satisfy their degree requirement will be considered. Please indicate this in your application.
  • Possesses basic knowledge of the identification, evaluation, and management of archaeological resources to include demonstrated archaeological fieldwork consisting of survey, testing, and/or excavation procedures to include laboratory analysis experience (knowledge in this area is typically obtained through a Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field).
  • Possesses familiarity with related legislation such as the National Historic Preservation Act, the Georgia Environmental Policy Act, and Section 4(f) of the US DOT Act and competency in comprehending laws, policies, rules and regulations related to archaeological resources. 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL GDOT JOBS

The interview is just one part of the overall selection process and is not the only criteria used to make the final selection.  In addition to the interview, the final selection is based on the applicant’s work history and performance (documented in HR and/or Office files), PeopleSoft/employee status (i.e. rehire code), employee performance reviews, personnel file review (HR & Office Files), criminal background check, employment reference checks (including references and commendations from Managers and other relevant documentation) and, for supervisory positions, demonstrated leadership skills based on past and current work history will be considered.  

Good Employment Standing (Internal Applicants Only):

In accordance with the Interview and Selection Process (ISP), an applicant must have no active disciplinary actions to be in good employment standing.  Actions that may disqualify an applicant include letters of reprimand (active for 12 months after issuance date); suspension without pay or disciplinary demotion (active for 12 months from the effective date); Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and Leave Restriction Plans (active until 12 months after the date of conclusion).  In addition, an employee must have an overall ePerformance rating score of three (3) or higher on their most current evaluation.  Please note that Memorandums of Concern are not considered disqualifying factors.  Human Resources may remove any employee from consideration for selection who is pending a disciplinary action; however, if the action is resolved in the employee’s favor, he or she will be allowed to compete.
