The Georgia Department of Revenue seeks to fill a Staff Attorney position within the Office of the General Counsel’s External Operations Section. Reporting to the Managing Attorney, External Operations, the position is responsible for providing analysis and/or recommendations on legal issues relating to the Department’s Local Government Services Division with special focus on the Unclaimed Property Program.    

Key duties include but are not limited to assisting the Unclaimed Property Program with implementation and administration of new statutory mandates.  The successful candidate will conduct legal review of business processes in an area with new and emerging questions of law and policy.  In this position, you will review and advise on questions related to property claims and program registrations. Property claim disputes may be presented for resolution by a judicial or administrative tribunal, requiring communication and strategic coordination with the Office of the Attorney General.

Minimum Entry Qualifications for the Attorney 1:

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR reciprocity (must obtain Law License).

Minimum Entry Qualifications for the Attorney 2:

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR reciprocity AND One year of relevant legal experience OR One year of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 1 (LEP020).

Minimum Entry Qualifications for the Attorney 3:

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR reciprocity AND Two years of relevant legal experience OR Two years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 2 (LEP021).

Required Skills & Experience

Legal Writing Sample: Submission of a writing sample, not to exceed 10 pages, from a brief, memo, or other similar document.  To receive consideration, this must be attached to your profile/application.

·       Customer Service: Ability to provide professional legal services to agency divisions and executive leadership.

·       Teamwork & Cooperation: Ability to work collaboratively with project teams, both within the legal group and among business divisions.

·       Results Orientation: Ability to complete projects with limited supervision.

·       Judgment & Decision Making: Ability to weigh the needs of the agency to determine the best course of action for all parties in an evolving legal landscape.

·       Communication skills: Ability to analyze and organize facts and present them in a clear and logical form, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of audiences. 

·       Accountability: Ability to accept responsibility for one’s actions with honesty and integrity, while remaining committed to organizational success.

 

 Preferred Qualifications

·       Experience drafting legal documents such as memoranda, agency determination letters, regulations, and presentation or training materials for legal programs.

·       Experience reviewing contracts such as asset purchase agreements. 

·       Experience preparing information and records for use in administrative and/or judicial hearings.

·       Prior experience or education with unclaimed property administration matters and/or state and local tax.

Position Status & Pay Grade: Unclassified – Pay Grade K, L, or M (depending on experience)
Hiring Range
:

Attorney 1 (Pay Grade K): $63,000 to $65,000

Attorney 2 (Pay Grade L): $70,000 to $72,000

Attorney 3 (Pay Grade M): $77,000 to $80,000

Location: Department of Revenue Agency Headquarters 1800 Century Blvd NE, Atlanta GA 30345 “*This vacancy requires office hours of 8am – 5pm, Monday – Friday. A telework option is contingent upon demonstrated proficiency after training and is subject to change based on DOR policies and ability to meet performance expectations” or something more specific based on your preference.
